Work out your semester and cumulative GPA from credits and grades, with a grade-point table you can edit to match your university.

This is a free tool that runs in the browser: open the page to use it. File tools process files on the visitor's own device; files are never uploaded or stored. No account, sign-up, payment or watermark.

Add each module with its credits and grade, and the calculator gives your GPA, your total credits and your total grade points. The grade-point table starts with the 4.0 scale printed in the University of Peradeniya examination manual, which follows UGC Circular 901, and you can edit every value to match your own university. Add your GPA so far to get a cumulative GPA. Nothing you type leaves your device.

A GPA is a credit-weighted average. Each grade becomes grade points, the points are multiplied by the module's credits, and the total is divided by the total credits: GPA = sum of (credits x grade points) divided by sum of credits. This is the formula printed in the University of Peradeniya examination manual (October 2023) and in the University of Moratuwa BSc Engineering performance criteria (31:2020). Moratuwa rounds the semester GPA to the nearest two decimals, and Peradeniya rounds the CGPA to two decimals before it awards a class.

The default table is the Sri Lankan 4.0 scale. The University Grants Commission approved common grades and grade point values for all undergraduate degree programmes in Circular 901 of 25 November 2008, to be adopted from the academic year starting in August 2010. The Peradeniya manual prints them as A+ and A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0 and E 0.0, and the University of Colombo Faculty of Arts by-laws print the same values. The Moratuwa engineering criteria for the 2020 intake use them without D+ and call the failing grade F. Some sources show other scales: Nuffic lists a University of Colombo table with A at 3.75, A- at 3.50 and B+ at 3.25. We could not confirm that table from the university's own documents, so it is offered only as a different example. Every university and degree programme can have its own scale, so check yours and edit the table.

For a cumulative GPA the tool treats your earlier results as one block. Your GPA so far is multiplied by the credits behind it, this term's grade points are added, and the sum is divided by all the credits. Use the exact GPA your university gave you. Some degrees weight each year differently, and some modules are marked pass or fail and are left out of the GPA, so this is a calculation aid and not your official result.

Sums are done in whole units, with credits in hundredths and grade points in thousandths, so 3 credits at 3.7 is exactly 11.10 and a GPA that lands on 3.005 rounds half up to 3.01 instead of drifting with floating point. A grade that is not in your table is reported and its module is left out, never counted as zero by accident.

Grade points on three published Sri Lankan scales:

Q: What GPA scale do Sri Lankan universities use?
A: A 4.0 scale based on UGC Circular 901 of 2008, where A+ and A are 4.0, A- is 3.7 and B+ is 3.3. The circular covers all undergraduate degree programmes in the state university system, and the University of Peradeniya examination manual, the University of Moratuwa engineering criteria and the University of Colombo Faculty of Arts by-laws all print it. Other sources show different scales: Nuffic lists a University of Colombo table with A at 3.75, A- at 3.50 and B+ at 3.25, which we could not confirm from the university. Check your own handbook or the key on your transcript.

Q: How do I calculate GPA from credits and grades?
A: Multiply each module's credits by its grade points, add those products together, and divide by the total credits. For example, a 3-credit A (4.0) and a 2-credit B (3.0) give (12 + 6) divided by 5, which is 3.60.

Q: What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
A: GPA usually means the average for one semester or one set of modules. CGPA is the cumulative GPA across everything so far. Enter your GPA so far and its credits to get a cumulative figure. Some universities weight each year differently for the final CGPA, so use your official transcript for anything that counts.

Q: What GPA is a First Class or a Second Upper?
A: It depends on the university and the degree. The Peradeniya manual (citing UGC Circular 901) and the Moratuwa BSc Engineering criteria both print First Class from a GPA of 3.70, Second Class Upper Division from 3.30 to 3.69, Second Class Lower Division from 3.00 to 3.29 and Pass from 2.00 to 2.99. Classes also depend on other conditions in each programme's rules, and other universities may differ, so this tool shows the bands only as a reference and does not decide your class.

Q: Can I change the grade points?
A: Yes. Open the grade-point table, edit any grade letter or value, add or remove grades, or load one of the published tables as a starting point. A row with a missing or invalid value is ignored and the page tells you why.

Q: Do pass or fail modules count in the GPA?
A: Usually not. The Peradeniya manual says non-GPA courses are left out of the CGPA, and the Moratuwa criteria exclude non-GPA modules, withdrawn modules and academic concessions. Leave those modules out of the list. Failing grades such as E or F that do count are worth 0.0 points and still add their credits.

Q: How should I enter a repeated module?
A: Enter the grade your university actually counts. Some universities cap the grade at a repeat attempt. The Peradeniya manual, for instance, says a grade higher than C is not awarded at later attempts unless the faculty treats the sitting as a first attempt. Check your own regulations.

Q: Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
A: No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
