Test your typing speed and accuracy in 30, 60 or 120 seconds. See net and raw words per minute, every mistake marked, and your personal best. Nothing is uploaded.

This is a free tool that runs in the browser: open the page to use it. File tools process files on the visitor's own device; files are never uploaded or stored. No account, sign-up, payment or watermark.

Choose 30, 60 or 120 seconds and type the text shown. The clock starts with your first key press. When time is up you get your net speed, raw speed and accuracy in words per minute, with every wrong character marked as you went. It works with a phone keyboard too, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

The clock starts on your first key press, not on a button, and it runs on timestamps from the browser's clock rather than counting ticks, so a slow screen cannot change your result. A key pressed after time is up is ignored. If you finish the whole text before time is up, the test ends and your speed is worked out over the time you used.

A word is five characters, spaces and punctuation included. That is the usual convention for typing speed (Wikipedia, Words per minute). Raw WPM = (all characters typed / 5) / minutes. Net WPM = (correct characters / 5) / minutes. Accuracy = correct characters / characters typed. A character is correct when it matches the character in the same place in the text. Backspace is allowed, and the score uses what is in the box when time ends, so a mistake you fixed does not count against you and one you left does. Other sites may work out net speed differently, so only compare results made the same way.

Common words picks random words from a list of 200 common English words chosen for this page, in lower case with no punctuation. Passages are short pieces of ordinary prose: six written for this page and the opening of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (1813), which is in the public domain, in the wording of Project Gutenberg ebook 1342. Enough text is prepared for a typist at 180 words per minute, so you cannot run out in the time. English only; typing in Sinhala is not tested here.

After each test the page compares your net speed with one published figure. In the CHI 2018 study Observations on Typing from 136 Million Keystrokes, 168,000 volunteers transcribed sentences in an online test. Their average was 51.56 WPM, and the fastest typists reached 120 WPM or more. Treat the comparison as rough: that study used other texts and timed from the first to the last key press of each sentence, and volunteers chose to take part.

The text box is a normal text input, so on-screen keyboards, autocorrect and input methods work, and the page never rewrites what you type. Turn off predictive text on a phone for a fair test. Pasting is switched off. To start again press Tab then Enter, or use Restart. Only your best score for each time and text choice is saved in this browser: net speed, raw speed, accuracy and the date. A run counts as a best if it lasted the full time, or the text ran out after at least 10 seconds, with at least 20 characters typed. A speed above 400 WPM is not recorded, because that is not typing.

Q: How is typing speed in WPM calculated?
A: A word is counted as five characters, so words per minute is characters divided by five, divided by the minutes taken. This page reports raw WPM from every character typed and net WPM from the correct characters only.

Q: What is a good typing speed?
A: In a 2018 study of 168,000 volunteers who typed sentences in an online test, the average was 51.56 WPM and the fastest typists reached 120 WPM or more. Your result also depends on the text, the keyboard and whether you look at the keys, so use it to measure your own progress.

Q: What is the difference between net and raw WPM?
A: Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong. Net WPM counts only the correct ones, so each uncorrected mistake lowers it. Accuracy is the share of characters that were correct.

Q: Why does the clock start when I type and not when I click?
A: So the time you spend getting ready does not count. The clock starts with your first key press and uses the browser's clock, so the result does not depend on how fast your screen redraws.

Q: Does it work on a phone?
A: Yes. It uses a normal text box, so the on-screen keyboard works. Autocorrect and predictive text can change words as you type, which makes the score less fair, so switch them off on the keyboard if you can.

Q: Is what I type recorded?
A: No. The text you type stays on the page and is not sent anywhere or kept. Only your best score for each time and text choice is saved in this browser, and you can delete it from the panel at the bottom.

Q: Can I test Sinhala typing?
A: No. This test is for English text only, so Sinhala typing is not tested here.
