Salary to Hourly Rate Calculator - Monthly, Weekly, Daily, Yearly

Type one pay figure and say whether it is per hour, day, week, month or year. The calculator shows all the others, using the hours per week, days per week and paid weeks per year that you enter.

About this tool

The defaults are a 40 hour, 5 day, 52 week year, and one click switches to 35 or 45 hours. It is plain arithmetic: gross in, gross out, and nothing leaves your browser.

How it works

Everything goes through the yearly pay. A yearly figure stays as it is, a monthly figure is multiplied by 12, a weekly figure by the paid weeks per year, a daily figure by the days per week and the weeks per year, and an hourly figure by the hours per week and the weeks per year.

From the yearly pay the other rates follow. Hours in a year are the hours per week times the paid weeks. The hourly rate is the yearly pay divided by the hours in a year, the weekly pay is the yearly pay divided by the paid weeks, the daily pay is the weekly pay divided by the days per week, and the monthly pay is a twelfth of the year. Fortnightly pay is two weeks.

A month is not four weeks. It is 52 divided by 12, about 4.33 weeks, so dividing a monthly salary by four weeks overstates the hourly rate by roughly 8 per cent. Dividing the yearly pay by the real hours worked avoids that mistake.

Change the paid weeks if you are paid for fewer than 52, for example 48 if four weeks a year are unpaid. In Sri Lanka the Shop and Office Employees Act sets the normal maximum for shops and offices at 8 hours a day and 45 hours a week (section 3), which is why 45 is one of the quick choices. Many employers use 40 hours or fewer, and your contract decides yours.

Worked examples

Rs. 120,000 a month on a 40 hour, 5 day, 52 week year

The year pays Rs. 1,440,000 over 2,080 hours, so the hourly rate is Rs. 692.31. The daily pay is Rs. 5,538.46 and the weekly pay is Rs. 27,692.31.

Rs. 500 an hour

Forty hours a week pays Rs. 20,000 a week, which is Rs. 1,040,000 a year or Rs. 86,666.67 a month.

Rs. 100,000 a month, paid for only 48 weeks

The year pays Rs. 1,200,000 over 1,920 hours (40 x 48), so the hourly rate is Rs. 625.00. With 52 paid weeks it would be Rs. 576.92.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a monthly salary to an hourly rate?

Multiply the monthly salary by 12 and divide by the hours you work in a year, which is hours per week times paid weeks. For Rs. 120,000 a month on 40 hours and 52 weeks that is Rs. 1,440,000 divided by 2,080, or Rs. 692.31 an hour.

Why not divide the monthly salary by 4 weeks?

Because a month is about 4.33 weeks, not 4. Rs. 120,000 divided by 4 weeks and 40 hours gives Rs. 750.00 an hour, which is too high. The right figure on a 52 week year is Rs. 692.31.

How many working hours are normal in Sri Lanka?

For shops and offices the Shop and Office Employees Act sets the normal maximum at 8 hours a day and 45 hours a week, not counting rest and meal intervals. Many employers use 40 hours or fewer, and trades under a wages board have their own rules. The default here is 40, and the buttons give 35 and 45.

Should I use 52 weeks a year?

52 is the usual choice and it is the default. A year has 52.14 weeks, and using 52 keeps the hours round. Use fewer weeks if some weeks are unpaid, because the same yearly pay is then spread over fewer hours.

Is this the rate used for overtime?

Not necessarily. For shop and office employees overtime is worked from the monthly pay divided by 240, using basic pay plus a cost-of-living allowance, and not from the pay over your actual hours. The overtime calculator uses that rule.

Does the result include tax or EPF?

No. It converts the figure you give, so gross in gives gross out and take-home in gives take-home out. For take-home pay after EPF and income tax use the net salary calculator.

Can I go from an hourly rate to a monthly salary?

Yes. Choose Per hour, enter the rate and your hours, and read the monthly pay. Rs. 500 an hour on 40 hours and 52 weeks is Rs. 86,666.67 a month.
