Sri Lanka Phone Number Checker and Formatter - +94, 07X and Area Codes

Type or paste Sri Lankan phone numbers in any common form (0712345678, 071 234 5678, +94 71 234 5678, 0094712345678, 011 2345678) and see whether each one is well formed, whether it is mobile or landline, the area for a landline, and the clean international and local versions.

About this tool

Paste a whole list, one per line. The work is done in your browser and no number is sent anywhere.

How it works

Sri Lanka's numbering plan, published by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), uses 10-digit national numbers that start with the trunk prefix 0. Dialled from abroad, the 0 is dropped and +94 is put in front, so there are nine digits after +94. Mobile numbers are in the 07 range. A landline number is a three-digit area code beginning with 0, such as 011 for Colombo, then a seven-digit subscriber number.

The checker strips spaces, hyphens, dots and brackets, then reads the number as local (0...), international (+94... or 0094...) or international without the plus sign (94...). A 0 written after +94, as in +94 (0) 71 234 5678, is dropped. Nine digits with no leading 0 are read as a local number that lost its 0. Seven digits alone are refused, because the area code is missing.

A landline number is valid only if its area code is in the TRC table, which is shown below. The plan's text mentions 33 local areas but its table lists 29 codes, and this tool uses the table. The area name is the town the table gives for that code; a code can serve nearby places too, so treat it as a guide. An unlisted code is reported as not recognised, which can mean a typing mistake or a newer allocation. Special-service numbers such as short codes and freephone numbers are not checked.

The tool does not name the company behind a mobile number. The plan reserves the whole 07 range for mobile services and does not tie a prefix to a company. The regulator has been preparing mobile number portability, which lets people keep a number when they change company. A prefix is therefore not proof of who runs a number. The check is also about shape only: a valid result does not mean the number is in service.

Worked examples

A mobile number

071 234 5678 is a mobile number. International form: +94 71 234 5678. E.164 form: +94712345678. 0094712345678 and 94712345678 give the same result.

A Colombo landline

011 2345678 is a landline in Colombo (area code 011). International form: +94 11 234 5678. E.164 form: +94112345678.

A messy entry

+94 (0) 81 234 5678 is read as a Kandy landline (area code 081). The (0) after +94 is dropped and the result is +94812345678.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits is a Sri Lankan phone number?

Ten digits when written locally, starting with 0 (for example 0712345678), and nine digits after +94 when written internationally (+94712345678). Landline numbers follow the same lengths.

How do I write a Sri Lankan number for an international call?

Drop the leading 0 and put +94 in front: 0712345678 becomes +94712345678. This is the E.164 form. On a landline phone replace + with the international prefix of the country you are calling from.

Which area code is Colombo, Kandy or Galle?

Colombo is 011, Kandy is 081 and Galle is 091. The table on this page lists all 29 area codes in the TRC numbering plan, including Jaffna (021), Matara (041) and Anuradhapura (025).

Can the number tell me the mobile operator?

Not reliably, so this tool does not say. The numbering plan does not tie a prefix to a company, and the regulator has been preparing mobile number portability, so that people can keep their number when they switch company.

Does a valid result mean the number works?

No. It means the number has the right shape for a Sri Lankan mobile or landline number. Whether a person or line exists behind it cannot be known from the digits.

Why was my landline number rejected?

The most common reasons are a missing area code, a wrong number of digits, or an area code that is not in the TRC table. The message under each result says which. If you are sure the number is right, it may be a newer allocation that the 2009 table does not list.

Is the phone number sent anywhere?

No. The checking happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
