About this tool
WAV files can be enormous - a few minutes of stereo audio easily runs into hundreds of megabytes - and MP3 typically shrinks that by 90% or more with little audible difference at a decent bitrate.
How it works
The WAV file's raw audio is re-encoded to MP3 through a real LAME encoder running as WebAssembly, the same encoder used by most desktop audio software.
WAV stores audio uncompressed, so the whole size difference after conversion comes from MP3's compression - not any change in the underlying recording.
Set an in-point and out-point before converting if you only need a section, useful for trimming a long recording down to a highlight or ringtone.
Worked examples
Shrinking a voice recording for sharing
A WAV recording from a dedicated recorder or DAW export often needs to be MP3 before emailing or messaging it - this does the conversion in one step.
Converting a sample or sound effect
Convert a WAV sound effect to MP3 for use somewhere that doesn't need studio-quality uncompressed audio.
Trimming and converting in one step
Set the start and end points around the section you want, and the output MP3 contains only that trimmed section.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting to MP3 lose audio quality?
Yes, MP3 is lossy - but at standard or high quality settings the difference is inaudible to most people for typical listening.
Why is my WAV file so much bigger than the MP3?
WAV stores every sample uncompressed. MP3 discards audio detail your ear is less likely to notice, which is where the size savings comes from.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No, the whole process runs in your browser tab.
Can I trim the audio while converting?
Yes, set an in and out point and only that section converts.
What bitrate does the MP3 use?
A bitrate high enough to stay transparent for typical music and speech. WAV is uncompressed, so the drop in size is dramatic regardless.
Can I convert several WAV files at once?
One at a time here. Each conversion is a full re-encode, so batching them would mostly mean waiting longer before seeing any result.
Is MP3 or M4A better?
M4A (AAC) sounds slightly better at the same bitrate. MP3 plays on absolutely everything. Pick M4A for quality, MP3 for compatibility.
Does it work with very long recordings?
Yes, though a multi-hour WAV is a large file to hold in memory. On a phone, a long recording is the most likely thing to run out of memory.
Does this work on my phone?
Yes for a typical WAV file - it runs in your phone's browser with no app to install. Only a very long recording is likely to run into the memory limits mentioned above.
