Online Notepad - Saves in Your Browser, Word Count, Download as .txt

Type, and your notes are saved in this browser a moment later.

About this tool

Keep up to 100 notes, count words and characters, switch to a full screen writing mode, and download any note as a .txt file or open one from your computer. There is no account, and nothing is sent to a server.

How it works

About half a second after you stop typing, your notes are written to your browser's localStorage under one key. They are also written at once when you switch tabs, close the page or leave the tool, and the page shows when it last saved. The stored notes are read before anything is written, so a blank page can never replace what you wrote. If stored notes cannot be read, for example because the data is damaged, a copy is kept under a second key and you can download it instead of it being overwritten.

localStorage belongs to one browser on one device. MDN says browsers can store up to 5 MiB of local storage per origin and throw a QuotaExceededError when it is full. If that happens this page says so and keeps your text on screen so you can download it. MDN also notes that private windows may apply different quotas and usually delete stored data when they close. Clearing site data, or using another browser or device, removes or hides your notes, so download anything you cannot lose.

A note's title is its first line with text, or a name you give it with Rename. New note adds one at the top of the list. Delete note and Delete all notes both ask you to confirm. Up to 100 notes are kept, each up to 500,000 characters. Words are runs of characters between spaces or line breaks. Characters are counted as Unicode code points, so a simple emoji counts as one. Lines are numbered as an editor numbers them, so a line break at the end starts a new, empty line.

Download .txt saves the open note as UTF-8 text. Open a .txt reads a file of up to 1 MB as a new note. It understands UTF-8 and UTF-16 files that start with a byte order mark, turns Windows and old Mac line breaks into plain ones, and refuses files that look binary or are not valid UTF-8 rather than showing garbage. Undo and redo are your browser's own text box behaviour (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y). The undo history is kept while you stay on a note and starts again when you switch notes.

If the notepad is open in two tabs, the tab you edit last wins. The other tab is told that the notes changed (the browser's storage event only reaches tabs other than the one that made the change, MDN) and offers to load the other version. Before this page replaces a version that another tab saved, it keeps a copy of that version under a separate key, and the page offers it as a download until you choose Delete saved data. A save never replaces a version this page has not seen without keeping it first.

Worked examples

A draft that survives a closed tab

Write a few lines, close the tab, and open the notepad again in the same browser. The note is back where you left it. Close the browser and open it tomorrow: still there, unless your settings clear site data when the browser closes.

Counting an assignment

Paste your draft and read the line under the box. A note with Hello world on one line and second line on the next shows 4 words, 23 characters (20 without spaces) and 2 lines.

Moving a note to another device

Notes do not sync between devices. Download the note as .txt, send the file to yourself, and open it on the other device with Open a .txt, where it becomes a new note.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my notes stored?

In your browser's localStorage on this device, under the key hsl:kit:notepad:v1. They are not sent to a server, so this site cannot see them. They are stored as plain text, so anyone who uses this browser profile could read them.

Will I lose my notes if I clear my browsing data?

Yes. Clearing site data removes localStorage, and a different browser, device or private window starts with no notes. Private windows may also delete stored data when they close (MDN). Download a .txt copy of anything important.

Is there a limit on how much I can write?

Up to 100 notes of 500,000 characters each, and the browser's own limit, which MDN puts at 5 MiB of local storage per origin. If the browser's storage is full, the page tells you the last change was not saved.

Can I get a deleted note back?

No. Deleting a note, or all notes, cannot be undone, which is why the page asks you to confirm first. Delete saved data in the panel at the bottom removes everything this tool has stored in your browser.

Does it sync between my phone and my computer?

No. Each browser keeps its own notes. To move one, download it as .txt on one device and open it on the other.

What happens if I open it in two tabs?

The tab you edit last wins. The other tab shows a notice that the notes were changed elsewhere and lets you load that version or keep its own. The version that gets replaced is kept as a copy you can download, so one tab cannot silently destroy the other's notes.
