Tip and Bill Split Calculator - Per-Person Share With Service Charge and Rounding

Enter the bill, the tip percentage you want to leave, an optional service charge and the number of people. You get each person's share, the total and a breakdown.

About this tool

If you want round numbers, round each share up to a whole rupee or to Rs. 10 and the tool shows exactly how much extra that collects. It suggests no tip: the percentages are yours to choose, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

How it works

The service charge is the bill times its percentage, and the tip is the bill times the tip percentage; both are rounded to the cent. If your bill has a service charge you can choose to work the tip out on the bill alone or on the bill plus the service charge. The total is the bill plus the service charge plus the tip. Rs. 5,000 with a 10% tip is 5,000 + 500 = Rs. 5,500.

To split evenly, the total is divided by the number of people. When it does not divide into whole cents, the tool shows the gap instead of hiding it: Rs. 1,000 between three people is Rs. 333.33 each with one cent left over, so two people pay Rs. 333.33 and one pays Rs. 333.34, and the three shares add up to exactly Rs. 1,000.00.

Rounding up to a whole rupee, or to a step of Rs. 5, 10, 50 or 100, gives everyone the same round amount. Each share is the total divided by the number of people, rounded up to the next multiple of the step, so the group always pays at least the total. The surplus is shown as the rounding difference. Rs. 1,100 between three people is about Rs. 366.67 each, which rounds up to Rs. 367, so the group pays Rs. 1,101, which is Rs. 1 over.

Tipping customs and service charges vary between places and venues, and this tool claims no rule or norm. The 10% tip it starts with is only an example. Some restaurants add a service charge to the bill, so look at your bill for one before you decide on a tip. Every amount is worked out exactly, with no floating-point error.

Worked examples

Rs. 5,000 bill, 10% tip, four people

The tip is Rs. 500 and the total is Rs. 5,500. Each of the four people pays Rs. 1,375.00.

A bill with a service charge (example rates)

A Rs. 4,200 bill with a 10% service charge (Rs. 420) and a 5% tip on the bill (Rs. 210) comes to Rs. 4,830. If the tip is worked out on the bill plus the service charge instead, it is 5% of Rs. 4,620 = Rs. 231 and the total is Rs. 4,851.

Rs. 1,000 between three people, to the cent

1,000 / 3 is 333.33 with a cent left, so two people pay Rs. 333.33 and one pays Rs. 333.34. The shares add up to exactly Rs. 1,000.00.

Rs. 1,100 between three people, rounded up to Rs. 10

The exact share is about Rs. 366.67, which rounds up to Rs. 370. The group pays Rs. 1,110, which is Rs. 10 over the total.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill evenly?

Add any service charge and tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. A Rs. 5,500 total between 4 people is 5,500 / 4 = Rs. 1,375 each. This tool also handles totals that do not divide evenly.

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 10% tip on Rs. 5,000 is 5,000 x 0.10 = Rs. 500. The percentage is up to you: this tool starts with an example and does not suggest an amount.

Should the tip be worked out before or after the service charge?

There is no single rule, and the tool does not claim one. Pick whichever you intend: with a service charge entered, you can switch between the bill alone and the bill plus the service charge and see how the total changes. On a Rs. 4,200 bill with a 10% service charge and a 5% tip it is Rs. 4,830 or Rs. 4,851.

What happens when the total does not divide evenly?

In exact mode some people pay one cent more so the shares add up to the total. Rs. 1,000 between 3 is Rs. 333.33, Rs. 333.33 and Rs. 333.34. If you would rather have equal round amounts, use the rounding option.

Why would I round each share up?

Equal round amounts are easier to pay in cash or by transfer. Rounding up means the group pays slightly more than the total, and the tool shows the difference so you know where it goes. For example Rs. 1,100 between 3 rounded up to a whole rupee collects Rs. 1,101, which is Rs. 1 extra.

Does this tell me how much I should tip?

No. Customs on tipping and service charges differ from place to place and venue to venue, and no rule is built into this tool. Check your bill for a service charge, then enter the tip you want to leave, or none.

Can people pay different amounts?

Not here: the split is equal. To share a total unevenly, use the ratio calculator, for example Rs. 5,500 in the ratio 3 : 2 gives Rs. 3,300 and Rs. 2,200.

Is my bill sent anywhere?

No. The sums run in your browser and nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
